Belize authorities warn of 20 escaped inmates that may head to Mexico

Hattieville, Belize — Authorities of Belize have sent a warning throughout Central America regarding the escape of 20 inmates from the Belize Central Prison Monday night. Photos of the escaped inmates have been circulating with Belize authorities warning countries, including Mexico, that they may try to enter.

The inmates are considered dangerous, most of whom officials report, were serving time for murders. At the time of their escape, officials say they were armed with at least one high-powered rifle and two magazines that were taken from a guard.

The escape occurred a day before the penitentiary was to begin 21 days of quarantine after the confirmation of a Covid-19 outbreak inside. On Friday, five cases of Covid-19 were detected inside the prison, after which, Belize officials announced the 21-day quarantine.

Quintana Roo Police remain on high alert after their escape, noting the fleeing inmates could cross into Mexico via the Rivera del Río Hondo.
