Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Two people have been arrested in relation to the shooting death of two men at a Riviera Maya hotel. In a press release, the Attorney General and the National Migration Institute reported the arrests of Christian R and Nhu T after arrest warrants were issued.
The man and woman were picked up on charges of homicide and attempted murder after three people inside the Xcaret Hotel were shot last week. The FGE said that an investigation that involved information from Canadian police, combined with reports from the National Migration Institute, Interpol Mexico and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of the Federal Government, lead to their arrests.
The FGE reported that “Christian “R” was part of a criminal group dedicated to depriving people of life and at the beginning of January 2022, he was ordered to carry out a job, for which he moved to the state of Quintana Roo, along with two subjects, arriving on January 16.
“With prior information on the identity and location of the target with the initials RJD, the accused, together with assassins, followed the victim both inside and outside of the hotel from January 17 to 20, since they had provisional access with a Day Pass.”
Information on his location was passed along in real time by telephone.
“However, due to the surveillance of private guards inside the hotel, as well as the police presence outside, the assassins desisted from carrying out their mission and left the state of Quintana Roo, which Christian “R” informed his contractor,” the FGE reported.
But on Friday, January 21, Christian “R” received instructions to pick up another subject hired for the same purpose at the airport and immediately move to the hotel, which they entered, apparently with bracelets, so they could remain in the hotel facilities.
“Once his target had been identified at approximately 2:45 p.m., Christian R shot his target inside the hotel before fleeing to a waiting car in the hotel parking lot. There, security feed recorded Christian R removing his sweatshirt and tossing it away before getting into the trunk of the car and fleeing the scene.”
In their statement, the FGE said that using hotel video and C5 state security cameras, they found Christian R and the vehicle used on the night of January 22, the day after the January 21 shooting.
“In relation to the probable participation of the Canadian identified as Nhu T, who was part of the group of 10 vacationers to which the victims also belonged, on the day of the events, she met the aggressor for nearly three minutes inside the hotel approximately 40 minutes before the execution of the victims. From that, it can be established that she had communication with him, as can be seen in the videos obtained from the security circuit of the lodging center,” the agency added.
On January 21, three people from a group of seven adults and three minors vacationing at Xcaret Hotel outside Playa del Carmen, were shot. Two of them, two men, died from that shooting.
The FGE added that according to their information, the shooting was over a debt generated by illicit transnational activities in which the victims who lost their lives participated.
Both Christian “R” and Nhu “T” will remain in preventative custody.
