Mexico City, Mexico — On Wednesday, another 175 Afghan nationals arrived at Terminal 1 of the Mexico City International Airport. This group, the fourth to arrive for humanitarian reasons, consisted of social media workers, activists and independent journalists, were accompanied by their families, including 75 minors.
The Afghan nationals arrived on an Egypt Air flight. The flight was made possible by timely intervention of the Mexican Embassies in Iran, the United Arab Emirates and the invaluable collaboration of the Egyptian government.
For immigration procedures, as in previous cases, coordination was essential for their arrival. Travel and living costs during their stay in Mexico will be covered by private sponsors and civil society organizations.
In adherence to the principles of solidarity in cases of asylum, refuge and humanitarian protection in Mexico, it is expected that other groups of Afghan citizens will arrive in the country in coming days.
The government of Mexico says the Ministry of Foreign Relations continues to maintain communication with the representatives of the groups that request protection for humanitarian reasons, governments of other countries and with dependencies of the Federal Public Administration.
