2.5 kilometers of sargassum barriers installed in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — For now, 2.5 kilometers of anti-sargassum barriers have been installed along the central coastal area of Playa del Carmen. Mayor Lili Campos made the announcement of the installation Monday, also saying that meetings are being scheduled regarding the other beaches.

“I inform you that anti-sargassum barriers have been installed on 2.5 kilometers of the coast of Playa del Carmen. From the fiscal dock to Punta Esmeralda, in coordination with Semar Mx and Zofemat. We are ready for Holy Week,” she posted.

Campos also said that in the next few days, she will meet with personnel from the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) about concession holders collecting sargassum.

“We are going to have a meeting next week where all the beach concessionaires will be summoned because it is important that we work on a comprehensive plans where everyone cleans every day while the sargassum season lasts,” she said adding that it is important that they are coordinated.

Campos says that once weather improves, additional barriers will be installed along the coast.

On March 11, the anti-sargassum barriers meant for Playa del Carmen arrived. Although the sargassum began arriving more than a week ago, the barriers are only now being installed.
