Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — With the beginning phases of the arrival of seaweed, Playa del Carmen will install the at-sea barriers next week. María de Lourdes Várguez Ocampo, director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) in Solidaridad said the barriers will be installed to help control the higher levels.
She said that until now, the seaweed making landfall is manually manageable, however, forecasts show a larger arrival.
“The arrival is already beginning to increase,” she said noting that “on Saturday, we had a considerable arrival, around 80 tons.”
Várguez said that the barrier will run north-south due to the region’s north winds, winds, which she says, helps to reduce the amount of landing seaweed.
She also said that an additional 40 people will be hired to aide in the ongoing task of manual sargassum removal in an attempt to keep the municipality’s beaches clear of seaweed.
