Texas man killed in early morning Puerto Morelos crash

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — The American driver of a car was killed early Tuesday in a two vehicle collision on a Puerto Morelos highway. Traffic was backed up for kilometers due to the 6:45 a.m. crash.

Municipal police, firemen and medical personnel rushed to the early morning scene to find one dead and at least three injured. The accident was reported on the two-lane Ruta de los Cenotes highway in Puerto Morelos.

According to early information, the driver of the private car was attempting a highway U-turn when the car was hit by a public transport van. The van involved was a public combi from the nearby town of Leona Vicario.

The crash happened in the middle of the road, closing it completely to traffic in both directions. Dozens of workers were left to walk the several-kilometer difference from the accident site to their jobs.

Those inside the private car are reported to be a family from Texas. The male driver of the car was killed in the accident. Three others from inside the vehicle were transferred to a hospital in Playa del Carmen.

Puerto Morelos firemen were at the scene removing the trapped driver from the crushed driver’s side of the car. The American driver of the private car has not been named. Police are investigating the official cause of the fatal accident.
