Suspect charged in home robbery through ongoing telephone extortion

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun woman accused of extorting a domestic worker from inside a private home has been charged. Police said Thursday that Mayra Alejandra “N” was arrested and charged after a complaint was filed against her.

According to a police statement, Mayra Alejandra “N” is accused of receiving extorted items that were the result of several threatening telephone calls.

“The defendant is being investigated for events that occurred on June 9th of this year, when a man called a landline at a residence located in Superblock 17,” read the police statement.

“A domestic worker answered and the man told her that her employer was in danger. He ordered her to gather and send several valuables to avoid harming her.”

Police said the called-in threats continued and on one occasion, the male caller “demanded that she go up to the bedroom where she was ordered to find valuables and place them in a suitcase.

“She was then forced to hand the suitcase to a ride-hailing driver who took her to the intersection of Tumbalá and Ocotepec streets in Superblock 48, where she was received by Mayra Alejandra “N”.”

According to police, a second suitcase of stolen items was also received by Mayra Alejandra “N” due to the ongoing threats.

“An arrest warrant was served against Mayra Alejandra “N” on June 13 after charges were filed against her.” Police say she has been ordered to remain in custody during her trial.
