Cancun, Q.R. — Prosecutors say they have secured a second indictment against a man accused of extorting then threatening to kill a journalist. Authorities say Jorge Luis “N” was formally indicted for his alleged involvement in acts likely constituting the crime of extortion.
This marks the second indictment against Jorge Luis “N” after he was charged with attempted murder in March of this year.
Police said regarding this second indictment, investigations indicate that early this year, the victim received several text messages and a phone call in which she recognized the voice of the accused.
The accused used threats to demand that the victim “keep paying him.”
According to their report, “the victim works in print media. Jorge Luis “N” told her that he would now take charge of everything related to the victim’s business, stating that if the victim did not agree, he would destroy both the business and everyone close to the victim.
Police said Jorge “N” claimed that was the instruction he had received, adding that he would call again later to issue further orders.
“From that point on, the victim was constantly harassed by visits from individuals with an intimidating appearance and foreign accents, prompting her to leave the city,” they said.
“On January 18 of this year, the aggrieved party arrived at a residence in SM 71 accompanied by two employees who remained outside. Minutes later, Jorge Luis “N” arrived, approached the victim’s vehicle, and placed a yellow envelope on the windshield.
“The envelope contained a demand that she either leave Quintana Roo or pay 200,000 pesos per month, as well as a requirement to shut down her social media accounts, with a warning that failure to comply would result in her death.”
Following his arrest and arraignment, Jorge Luis “N” was formally charged. The presiding judge ordered his remand in custody for two years as a precautionary measure.
