State Civil Protection confirms strong winds cause of internet antenna collapse

José María Morelos, Q.R. — Authorities confirm no injuries after a 75-meter tall antenna fell onto a metal structure attached to a school. Strong winds have been reported responsible for the collapse of the antenna in José María Morelos Friday.

Local residents assisted in the removal of the metal structure that collapsed and landed on part of the Ermilo Abreu Gómez Telesecundaria School. State Civil Protection reported the incident happened in the community of Sacalaca in the municipality of José María Morelos.

According to the state agency, “the 75-meter-tall antenna provided internet service to the Ermilo Abreu Gómez Telesecundaria School in the community of Sacalaca.

“The incident was caused by winds forecast for the day, with gusts ranging from 40 to 60 km/h across the state.”

Civil Protection and Public Security personnel, along with local residents. Were on-site Friday evening assessing the damage and ensuring there is no further risk to the community.

The collapse of the antenna also obstructed the road to X-Querol, prompting residents to clear away debris to allow vehicles to pass.
