Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Sargassum monitoring will begin again for the Cancun, Riviera Maya region on May 1, reports Esteban Amaro, director of the Red Monitoreo Sargazo.
Amaro says that on May 1, monitoring of arriving sargassum for the region will start and that publications on the conditions of area beaches will also resume. He says the arrival of some seaweed is expected for around mid-May, but with much less intensity that last year.
He stated that due to a health emergency, they have not been able to start monitoring and are awaiting permission from the Harbor Master to be able to go out into the field. Until now, the Cancun, Riviera Maya region has been relatively free of sargassum, with only a small recent arrival along the empty shores of Akumal.
