Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — City officials of Puerto Morelos say they are nearing completion of the installation of the sargassum fence along its coast. Mayor Laura Fernandez says that areas between López Mateos Street and Pelícanos Pier are already complete.
“The marine barriers will help to mitigate the macro algae in the coastal strip by up to 65 percent, orienting it towards specific points where amphibious bands will be placed to direct it directly to the trucks where there is a barge collecting it inside the sea,” she explained.
She says the goal is to have the least amount of sargassum land on the beaches as possible. The entire project consists of just over two kilometers of sargasso fencing being placed along the coast to protect public beaches of the municipality.
