Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Area businesses that were open late Wednesday were evacuated after the report of a fire. The 8:40 p.m. report had emergency services evacuating people from the immediate area of a seafood packing plant.
Emergency vehicles including police, ambulances and Civil Protection blocked a section of the main highway entrance into Puerto Morelos as a precaution.
Ten firemen from Puerto Morelos and eight firemen from Cancun responded to the call of a fire in the Comercializadora Corales del Mar Caribe seafood packing plant in the Pescadores neighborhood.
Both groups fought flames for just over two hours, declaring the fire official out at 11:15 p.m.
Municipal Civil Protection, who were also on site, ruled out the presence of ammonia or any other chemicals on the property. While local media reported an ammonia leak, Civil Protection clarified it was a fire that started in the company’s warehouse area where cardboard boxes were stored.
Firemen are still sorting out details, including the official cause. Emergency personnel responding to the incident did not report any injuries outside treating two firemen for minor smoke inhalation.
