Puerto Morelos averaged 73 percent hotel occupancy rate during slow 2025 tourist season

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — In a scenario of normalization of regional tourism activity, Puerto Morelos consolidated its tourist vocation. Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz says after the high levels of influx recorded in previous years, the municipality is heading into 2026 with expectations of gradual recovery and moderate growth.

According to figures from the Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, Puerto Morelos held an average annual hotel occupancy rate of 73.6 percent.

That annual average included the municipality’s 7,900 rooms, “reflecting a solid and competitive performance within the Mexican Caribbean,” she reported.

Mayor Blanca Merari said this consolidation process was marked by stability in hotel occupancy, diversification of the tourism offer and the arrival of new investments.

Among the main achievements in tourism, Blanca Merari highlighted the stability of the destination despite high regional competitiveness, as well as the promotion of new areas such as sports, gastronomic and nature tourism.

In addition, the municipality held national and international events that generated economic benefits and helped to maintain occupancy outside of peak seasons.

“We have peak occupancy rates like the ones we expect for this end of the year with levels above 90 percent which represents a significant economic benefit for the entire tourism sector,” she said.

She highlighted the strengthening of Puerto Morelos’ image as a safe, peaceful destination with its own identity, characteristics that differentiate it from large tourist urban centers and position it favorably among national and international visitors.

Raúl Guadarrama García, the Secretary of Sustainable Tourism, explained that the variation in hotel occupancy compared to 2024 is mainly due to the redistribution of tourist flows in the region, the growth of the supply of accommodation and a greater diversification of destinations within the state.

He added that, according to the Cómo Vamos report for the month of September, Puerto Morelos closed 2025 with 73 lodging establishments in addition to the supply in vacation rentals.

“In total we have approximately 7,900 rooms, which consolidates the municipality as one of the destinations with the greatest orderly growth within the Mexican Caribbean,” he pointed out.
