Lázaro Cárdenas, Q.R. — Emergency services from Puerto Morelos assisted Lázaro Cárdenas personnel in a fatal accident. One person was killed and two injured in the single vehicle rollover Saturday morning.

Due to the severity of the accident, help from the neighboring municipality was requested. Firemen from the municipality of Puerto Morelos assisted Lázaro Cárdenas firemen in lifting the overturned vehicle to free those trapped underneath.
The single vehicle accident left a 72 year old man dead and his two passengers serious after rolling along the 180 highway.
According to available information, a work truck loaded with rebar overturned on the federal highway in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas around 10:00 a.m. Saturday. The driver was heading toward Cancun when he lost control of his truck.
Along the 180 highway, he swerved off the highway where his tires caught the soft shoulder gravel. Due to the weight of his load, it caused the truck to overturn.
The cab of the truck was crushed inward, killing one and trapping two others.

Emergency crews worked for hours using hydraulic tools to cut through the metal and extract the two people who were trapped. Both were eventually freed and transported in critical condition to hospitals in Cancun.

At the scene, the death of the elderly man was confirmed. His body was covered pending the arrival of forensic personnel for removal. He has been identified as 72 year old J.E.D. from the state of Yucatan.

Traffic was heavily affected with the arrival of emergency vehicles as well as scattered debris from the overturning of the truck. That section of the 180 highway was partially shut until 2:00 p.m. while emergency services remained at the site.
