Chetumal, Q.R. — The Chetumal International Airport now has its own Customs office. The new service will allow for the entry and exit of import and export goods by air.
The announcement was made by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa who said the new Customs agency was made possible through negotiations with the Mexican government.
According to Lezama, it is considered a “historic step” in the development of the Chetumal airport. She said the new service will allow for the entry and exit of import and export goods by air as well as the articulation of a connectivity and economic development strategy with the Maya Train, the Strategic Fiscal Enclosure and the Chetumal Economic Development Hub, had the support of the Ministry of Economy.
“Today, the Agreement establishing the customs section at the Chetumal International Airport was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, which allows for the entry and exit of goods for import and export from the national territory and their customs clearance by air,” Mara Lezama stated.
This creates an important economic development ecosystem by linking the airport with the Maya Train freight line, the Chetumal Strategic Fiscal Zone, the Chetumal Free Zone, and the Chetumal Economic Development Hub for Well-being, because it allows us to design a true air, customs, and fiscal logistics platform in our state capital, added the head of the Executive branch.
Mara Lezama thanked President Claudia Sheinbaum for supporting Chetumal and restoring its luster through concrete actions.
“With this agreement, an increase in commercial activity and greater air connectivity with Central America and the Caribbean is expected, generating new sources of employment and opportunities for families in Quintana Roo,” she said.
