Holbox, Q.R. — At least two buildings were the target of a military operation on the island of Holbox Thursday morning. Elements of the Mexican Army, Navy and State Police participated in the search for a criminal cell.
The operation was headed by the State Attorney General (FGE) that resulted in at least two buildings being searched. Authorities were on the island in response to complaints of drug dealing and extortion.
Scores of uniformed personnel were at the ferry crossing at daybreak Thursday. The deployment focused the execution of search warrants at various properties identified as logistics operation centers.
Several island streets were closed to the public while authorities searched buildings reported as drug points of sale, known locally as narcotiendas or drug stores.
At least two properties were the main focus of the FGE investigation. Both searched buildings were located within a few blocks of island schools.
According to available information, police made the searches in response to resident complaints of the buildings being used to sell drugs, hide criminals and establish cells in the area.

There have also been complaints by island businesses and street vendors of extortion and aggressive threats from these groups. There were no public notices of arrests made during the Thursday Holbox operation.
