Mahahual clean yields sargassum free beaches

Mahahual, Q.R. — The beaches of Mahahual are once again sargassum free after a massive beach clean that saw the removal of the unwanted seaweed.

Rodolfo Espadas, vice president of the Association of Entrepreneurs of Costa Maya, said that the sargassum issue has become a focus for some tourist providers, adding that it has been the effort of the tourism service providers themselves that has resulted in the cleaned beaches.

He says the beach areas were freed of the washed up sargassum after the placement of networks to prevent the arrival of seaweed from reaching Mahahual shores. He says that more attention is needed from the government, both state and municipal, to ensure that tourists find the beaches clean and increase the length of their stay since some visitors were cutting their vacations short due to the sargassum-covered beach areas.

Espadas says he is confident that the influx of tourists will increase toward the end of the month with the holiday summer season.

“The effort we are making is showing good results because we can offer clean beaches without sargasso to visitors,” he said.
