Kantunilkín residents report trouble reaching fire department due to power outage

Lázaro Cárdenas, Q.R. — A Sunday afternoon fire has left a Kantunilkín business in ruins. Residents say it took nearly 30 minutes for emergency services to arrive due to a power outage. Firemen were eventually called to an address in the town of Kantunilkín in Lázaro Cárdenas after neighbors reported seeing smoke.

Civil Protection, Firefighters and Citizen Security personnel arrived at the scene on Javier Rojo Gómez Street to extinguish the flames, however, residents reported having trouble getting through to emergency services due to a power outage.

Phone and Internet were down when neighbors noticed the smoke and tried to call the fire department. By the time they got through, the fire had a head start and left the inside of the business in ruins.

Neighbors reported seeing large clouds of smoke coming from the inside of the store around 5:00 p.m. Two fire trucks arrive from where firmen worked to extinguish the flames.

Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the fire, however, neighbors have alleged that it was a short circuit that started after CFE workers left the area.
