“The events that led to his conviction occurred on July 27, 2023, when the victim, a ride-hailing driver, was at the bus station transporting three Greek women. As he loaded their luggage into his vehicle, he noticed five uniformed taxi drivers approaching him.

“These people told the ride-hailing driver that he couldn’t pick up the foreign women, because if he did, they would beat him up. He replied that he was just doing his job. At that moment, Alex Iván Cauich Kantún threw a rock into the vehicle.

“Subsequently, Yorzua Wlademar Echanove González grabbed the victim by the neck, and Alex Iván punched him in the stomach. At the same time, he put his hand in the victim’s right pants pocket and stole a cell phone. Yorzua Wlademar also managed to take his wallet, which contained one thousand pesos.

“After this, the suspects fled in opposite directions, but were apprehended by Municipal Police officers, who then turned them over to this Public Prosecutor’s Office,” the FGE reported in a statement.

Police said the motive for the attack “stems from the provision of private transportation services through a digital platform, an activity that those now sentenced intended to prevent.”
