Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Four men found guilty in the shooting death of an Italian coffee shop owner have been sentenced. State Attorney General (FGE) Raciel López Salazar says the men have sentenced to between 25 and 41 years for their role.
On Monday, López Salazar reported on the sentencing of four men found guilty in the 2023 broad daylight murder of an Italian woman. The woman was shot to death in May of that year while inside her Playa del Carmen cafe.
Police say the shooting was extortion related.
In a statement Monday, the FGE said José Joaquín Ramos Hernández, the perpetrator will serve a 41-year prison sentence, while his accomplices, identified as Pablo Hernández Hernández, Pedro Antonio Hernández Ricardes and Martín Flores Paredes, will spend 25 years in prison.
All four were found guilty of aggravated homicide when, on May 30, 2023, the victim, a Playa del Carmen resident originally from Italy, was behind the counter of a cafe she owned when José Joaquín Ramos Hernández arrived on a motorcycle.
Police say José Joaquín Ramos Hernández got off the motorcycle to enter the premises where he approached the woman and shot her.
According to police, he fled the scene on the motorcycle. “He was later assisted by the three others who were traveling in a pickup truck toward the state of Veracruz.”

Police confirm the motive for the fatal attack “was related to extortion through protection money.”
