Former Puerto Morelos city council member arrested for illicit use of power

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — A specialized police unit has arrested a former Puerto Morelos city council worker for illicit use of power. On Sunday, the State Attorney General (FGE) of Quintana Roo announced the arrest of José Antonio “N”.

Over the weekend, José Antonio “N” was taken into custody by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in Combating Corruption. The FGE says José Antonio “N” was taken into custody for his “probable participation in events possibly constituting the crime of illicit use of powers and powers of the public service to the detriment of the public administration of the H. City Council of Puerto Morelos.”

According to the FGE, the court order for his arrest derives from a complaint filed by the head of the Investigation Directorate of the Superior State Audit in which he declares that in the 2018-2021 municipal administration, a contract dated July 22, 2020 was made with a company that would carry out infrastructure work in the municipality.

These projects were not completed, but they were paid for and justified, simulating the completion of the work with the person now detained being responsible for overseeing the proper execution.

This omission caused patrimonial detriment to the Puerto Morelos City Council on the part of José Antonio “N” and other public servants. According to the FGE, the damage amounts to nearly 8 million pesos.

José Antonio “N” was picked up on an arrest warrant over the weekend and transferred to the Municipal Detention Center of Solidaridad. A judge has ordered him to remain in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for February 1, 2024.
