Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — The mayor of Puerto Morelos is calling on the public to avoid burning garbage after another forest fire was tended to in the municipality.
Municipal President Laura Fernández Piña is asking people not to start burns, for agriculture or garbage, during the current dry season after a fire was extinguished at the El Cardenal ranch at kilometer 3 of the Ruta de los Cenotes.
Approximately one hectare of jungle was affected by the fire, which as of Tuesday Braulio Núñez López the Ejidal Commissariat of Puerto Morelos said, was 85 percent contained above ground.
So far, the job of putting out the fire has involved firefighters, Civil Protection and volunteer ejidatarios who, in two days, have managed to control its spread with pumps and the use of the firetruck that was donated by Canadian firefighters last year.
“I send a thank you to our friends from Canada who donated this unit to us in December of last year, and to all those who participated in the process, who never took their finger off the line despite the vicissitudes they faced both in the administrative procedures and in the transfer to Puerto Morelos,” said the mayor.
“I make a call again to the citizens, mainly to those who live on ranches and in the ejido zone of both Puerto Morelos and Leona Vicario, not to burn garbage or carry out agricultural burning since we are in the dry season and there is a lot of combustible material in the jungle, which can quickly cause a forest fire,” she added.
