Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — The mayor of Puerto Morelos says fines will be handed out after two people were injured in a gas explosion at the Fives Oceanfront Hotel.
Guillermo Morales López, coordinator of Civil Protection, explained that the hotel modified the installation of the LP gas supply, which was not done properly. The modification lead to an accumulation of gas in the staff dining room, which exploded, injuring two hotel employees.
One employee received minor contusions and the other, first degree burns.
“The priority of my government, as I have always said, is to ensure and protect the physical integrity of the inhabitants of Puerto Morelos, the working class and tourists, so we will have a firm hand against those who violate this precept,” she said.
Morales López ensured the closure of the area while officials determine the amount of the fine in accordance with the Regulations and the dependency tabulator, for putting people’s lives at risk.
“Normally when a change is made to the gas installation, Civil Protection is informed, which did not happen in this case,” he said. He also added that the hotel will have to undergo a new and proper LP installation for the employee dining room before the area will be reopened.
