Puerto Morelos, Q.R. – Three people were shot to death Friday in the community of Leona Vicario. Two of the three killed were related to the current Puerto Morelos mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz.
The armed attack happened around 3:30 p.m. at the La Bestia Cocktail located in the town of Leona Vicario.
One of the three killed, Darío Sánchez Cordero, was the brother-in-law of the current mayor whose husband, Ignacio Sánchez Cordero, was shot and killed in a broad daylight shooting one year ago. At the time of his death, Sánchez Cordero was the Municipal Secretary of Social Development for the municipality of Puerto Morelos.
A second victim was her 15-year-old nephew, son of Darío Sánchez Cordero. The third person killed was not a family member, but a restaurant worker.
The State Attorney General’s Office has confirmed the triple execution saying that they have already begun an investigation. During a tour of the scene, he confirmed that two weapons were used during the three shootings, one long and one short weapon, and that they are collecting evidence to move forward.
He said that all background information will be reviewed to determine if this is related to the murder of Ignacio Sánchez. Last year, Ignacio Sánchez Cordero was shot to death outside a coffee shop over a land dispute.
The State Attorney General’s Office has not provided a possible motive for the shootings, however, State Prosecutor Oscar Montes de Oca, confirmed that on three or four occasions, Darío Sánchez Cordero had been the victim of physical attacks.
Darío Sánchez Cordero owned the seafood restaurant where all three were shot and killed.
