Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — Local officials have been paying their respects to a former mayor who died Monday in a highway accident. Paoly Perera Maldonado, the former mayor of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and director of the Technological Institute, died in a two vehicle crash.

Police say a relative of hers, Francisco Perera who was driving, remains critical in hospital.
The accident happened Monday morning around 11:00 a.m. when their SUV was sideswiped by another vehicle near the community of Uh May. There were three people in the white SUV at the time of the accident. The other two remain in hospital.
The group were traveling to the city of Chetumal when they were hit by another vehicle at the X-Hazil junction. The driver of the second vehicle also died. A female passenger inside the second vehicle was rushed to hospital in serious condition.

Police have not issued a statement or commented on a possible cause for the the fatal accident that left two dead.
