Akumal, Q.R. — One person was left in critical condition following a car accident outside the town of Akumal. On Thursday, emergency services responded to a two vehicle accident along the federal highway.

The crash occurred on the stretch of road meters from the Akumal overpass near a U-turn lane.
According to initial reports, the driver of a compact SUV was heading northbound when their vehicle rear-ended the left rear side of a pickup truck. The truck, plated from the state of Yucatan, was transporting a load of fruit and vegetables when it was hit.
The side hit caused the compact SUV to roll over. The driver lost control of the vehicle and drove onto the central median where they ultimately rolled over.
The pickup, which had come from Oxkutzcab, Yucatán, came to a stop a few meters ahead of the rolled vehicle. The male driver of the pickup was not injured, however, both people from inside the rolled SUV were.
Paramedics transferred a man from inside the SUV to hospital in critical condition after being cut free from the wreckage by Tulum firemen. The woman from inside the SUV, the passenger, was listed as serious but stable.
National Guard Highways arrive to secure the area. Authorities reported that several cans of alcoholic beverages were found laying on the highway around the scene of the crash.

Both vehicles were impounded. Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash.
