Cozumel, Q.R. — Joint efforts between the state and federal governments have seen the delivery of new Zofemat units that will be used to reinforce beach cleaning in the event Sargasso begins to arrive.
Cozumel municipal president Pedro Joaquín delivered 11 new units to the Directorate of Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), which will reinforce the beach cleaning work in Cozumel and support the collection of the sargassum that is anticipated to eventually land along various parts of the island.
The director of Zofemat, Ricardo Lizama, explained that the new machinery was acquired to help speed up the cleaning tasks, noting that with an investment of more than 4 million peso, a Nissan truck, a dump truck, two mini Bobcats, two ATVs and two semi-trailers along with other cleaning equipment were delivered.
He stressed that Cozumel is already prepared to tend to the next Sargassum season, saying “I want to thank all the Zofemat staff since 2019 was a year of hard work regarding the Sargasso.
Today, thanks to efforts of the Secretary of the Navy and the state government, we are already armed to deal with it, using resources efficiently and effectively so that Cozumel remains in the preferences of national and international tourism for its attractions and natural beauties,” said Pedro Joaquín.
He said that the delivery of new equipment will be added to new places for beach cleaning, which can offer jobs throughout the year.
He also thanked the public and private sector for joining the cleaning efforts of beaches and thus taking care of the environment on the island.
