Akumal, Q.R. — Authorities are investigating a traffic accident that left one dead and two seriously injured Tuesday night. Emergency services were sent to the scene of the single vehicle highway crash approximately 9 kilometers north of the town of Akumal.

At the scene, first responders found a totaled car off the highway. One person from inside was killed. Two others were transferred to hospital in serious condition.
Early information says the driver of the car was heading south when he happened upon traffic markers in the right lane in a poorly lite area. Unable to see the highway markers, the driver slammed into them, forcing him to lose control.
The vehicle continued down the highway for several meters where it plowed head-on through a pile of rocks off the road.

Rescuers were able to extract the male driver and a female front seat passenger from the vehicle. Both were rushed to hospital in Playa del Carmen with serious injuries.
A woman in the back seat was pronounced dead at the scene.

National Guard Highways were part of the responding team, managing traffic flow around the accident site while emergency personnel worked.

Police have not released the names of those involved in the accident.
