Bacalar, Q.R. — An apparent highway ambush Monday morning has left two people dead and three others injured. The incident happened at 12:30 a.m. on a stretch of the Bacalar–Felipe Carrillo Puerto federal road.
The driver of the truck was in the vicinity of the Buenavista community of Bacalar when their vehicle was fired upon. A man and woman from inside the white pickup truck were killed.

They have been identified as 29 year old Nestor Poot and 26 year old Daysi Pech. Both were local residents of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
According to available information, the victims were heading to the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto after having spent the day in Chetumal.
While traveling the highway, they were ambushed and shot by at least six occupants of a Jeep. In an attempt to evade the Jeep, the driver of the pickup lost control and went off the road. The truck rolled several times into thick highway brush.
Two people, a man and woman, were found dead at the scene. Three others, including a minor, were injured.
The survivors, who were later transferred to a Chetumal hospital, said they did not know the reason for the attack and could not identify the attackers.
Police have not said if the two killed died from gunshot wounds or injuries sustained in the rollover, however, preliminary information indicates that they had both been hit by bullets.
The Felipe Carrillo Puerto City Council published a statement hours after the incident, expressing condolences for the deaths of the man and woman who were well-known in the community.
“We deeply regret the passing of Daysi Pech and Néstor Poot. We join in the grief of their families and loved ones, wishing them strength and comfort. May they rest in peace,” he expressed.
