Another mass haul of 100 tons of sargassum removed from Mahahual coast

Mahahual, Q.R. — Authorities in Othón P. Blanco say a larger than normal amount of sargassum is arriving along its municipal shores. On Wednesday, over 100 tons of seaweed was cleared from the coast of Mahahual.

Othón P. Blanco Mayor Yensunni Martínez Hernández led the intensive cleanup effort on the beaches of Mahahual Wednesday. She says her municipality is actively joining the comprehensive, large-scale strategy promoted by Governor Mara Lezama to combat the arrival of sargassum on the state’s coasts.

She says the mass cleanup effort was carried out in coordination with the head of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (SEMA), Óscar Rébora Aguilera as well as other municipal directors and staff from various areas of the municipality.

Martínez Hernández recognized the unity and commitment of the government, business leaders, nautical and tourism service providers and the community at large, who are responsible for cleaning and maintaining the beaches every day.
