Air and sea search launched after report of floating body off coast of Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — UPDATED: Local authorities began an air and sea search after the report of a floating body. Area fishermen made the discovery late Friday morning off the coast of Puerto Morelos.

It was around 11:00 a.m. when a navy vessel was deployed in choppy waters with assistance from private boats in search of the body. A state helicopter was also used to help in the rescue mission.

Local fishermen reported the sighting Friday morning after coming across a naked adult body floating face down. Due to strong winds, the search and recovery continues to take a significant amount of time.

As of the time of reporting, authorities had still not reported finding the body seen by Puerto Morelos fishermen.

In a brief social media post, the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) said “SSC carries out search and rescue work following reports of a drowning. The Secretariat of Citizen Security, in coordination with the Secretariat of the Navy, carried out an air and sea operation following the report of a body floating in the sea in the municipality of Puerto Morelos.

“With the support of private vessels, the location where the body was found is being monitored and the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Quintana Roo was notified.

“Visitors and residents are recommended to respect the instructions of the Quintana Roo State Civil Protection Coordination as well as the marking of the flags on the sandy beaches.”

A majority of local beaches have red (danger) flags posted in the sand due to the strong winds. The SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) has not said if they believe the deceased to be someone reported missing-drowned from a local beach of if it is a separate type of incident.

UPDATE: Local authorities have recovered the body of a woman reported floating off the coast of Puerto Morelos.

The deceased has been identified as 28-year-old Ana Victoria “A” from Argentina. According to Argentina newspaper Clarin, the woman was a photographer and had arrived in Playa del Carmen in December of 2023.
