José María Morelos, Q.R. — A roof fire in José María Morelos left an entire secondary school in ruins. The late night fire happened at the Andrés Quintana Roo Federal Secondary School in José María Morelos when a palapa began to burn.
The palapa section of the school, which was used as a both a large classroom and storage area, caught fire and quickly spread to other areas.
Despite the efforts of firefighters, the palapa was a total loss, however, a majority of the exterior classrooms surrounding the building were not affected. Civil Protection and José María Morelos are working to determine a cause.
The palapa area that burned housed costumes that were to be used for the Carnaval celebrations currently taking place around the state.
