Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A second shooting in less than 24 hours has been reported along Fifth Avenue. On Thursday morning, the owner of a restaurant reported a gunman who shot up the façade of his business.
The shooting happened just as the Fifth Avenue eatery was opening around 9:00 a.m. While no one was injured, at least 10 shell casings were collected from the 14th Street location outside the front of the restaurant.
Several police arrived to speak with the business owner while others collected evidence from the scene. A concrete pillar was riddled with pock marks by bullets aimed at the eatery.
Nearly a dozen evidence markers were seen outside the front of the restaurant marking the casings that were left behind. City surveillance caught an image of an armed man running from the scene after the shooting.
The area of this latest shooting is next to a business that was shut down last year for drug sales. In August of 2022, a two-part business, Animalandia and its attached restaurant, was closed by the State Attorney General’s Office due to drug sales.
On Wednesday night, a man was shot and killed along Fifth Avenue and 22nd Street after an alleged argument. The now-deceased man had a criminal history involving narcotics. That shooting left two tourists injured.
