Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Playa del Carmen police continue in their search for a gunman who left one person dead and two injured. On Wednesday night, Solidaridad officers responded to a 911 report of shots fired along Fifth Avenue.
The report came through around 8:00 p.m. Witnesses told responding officers that an armed man approached another man and began shooting. The man was fired upon several times while walking Fifth Avenue and 22nd Street.
A couple reported to be tourists were also injured. The targeted attack left one man, José “C”, an alleged drug dealer from Tabasco, dying at the scene. Police found him laying face down on a sidewalk between two shops. He was pronounced on scene by paramedics.
The injured man and woman were treated at the scene before the woman was transferred to Playa del Carmen hospital. The man had an injury to his right cheek. The woman was shot in her calf. It is not known where they were from.
José “C” was shot after having an argument with another man. In the midst of running away, the second man followed and began shooting. According to information obtained, José “C” had a criminal history of drug-related offences and was recently released from a Tabasco jail.
Witnesses were able to detail to police a description of the getaway car the gunman ran to to flee the area. City surveillance cameras also captured the alleged bearded shooter wielding a gun on Fifth Avenue.
Playa del Carmen police continue in their search.
In a brief statement, Seguridad Pública Solidaridad reported “The Secretariat of Public Security and Municipal Transit of Solidaridad responded to a report to the emergency number 9-1-1 for detonations of a firearm on 22nd Street with Fifth Avenue.
“In coordination with federal authorities, the Municipal Solidaridad Police immediately implemented a search operation for those responsible. The possible perpetrators fled aboard a gray Aveo car.
“Any information that citizens can provide through 9-1-1 or the anonymous complaint number 089 is appreciated.”
