Mother and young daughter lose modest Chetumal home to raging blaze

Chetumal, Q.R. — Two people were able to escape their burning home after a raging fire consumed a majority of it. Firemen in Chetumal were at the site of the blazed in the Caribe neighborhood Friday afternoon.

A woman and her young daughter were able to escape the home without injury while neighbors tried to help put out the fire with buckets of water. Flames spread fast throughout the modest wood and metal house, leaving the pair homeless.

State Police officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) arrived along with Civil Protection personnel and members of the Fire Department. Firefighters deployed hoses to fight the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighboring properties.

Firemen were unable to save the home. In a social media post, the SSC said “personnel from the Secretariat of Citizen Security, through the State Police, responded to a report of a fire at a residence located in the Caribe neighborhood of Chetumal.

“In coordination with the Fire Department and Civil Protection, emergency response efforts were carried out. The individuals who were inside the property, a woman and a minor, managed to exit safely, and it has been confirmed that there are no injuries.

“Emergency responders continue to work in the area, therefore, the public is urged to exercise caution and allow emergency vehicles to pass.”

An electrical wiring fault has been said the likely cause of the Friday afternoon fire.
