Four Mayan homes destroyed in massive weekend fire

José María Morelos, Q.R. — Four homes were destroyed in a massive fire over the weekend in the municipality of José María Morelos. The fire happened Sunday evening in the Mayan community of El Naranjal, around nine kilometers from the town of José María Morelos.

According to area residents, firemen were slow to respond to the report of the fire. The lack of rain and ongoing strong winds helped with the spreading of flames from one home to another.

By the time firemen arrived, the fire had spread and included several side-by-side homes. A total of four modest wood frame and palapa grass-topped houses were lost in the 6:00 p.m. fire.

There were no injuries reported. An investigation into the official cause of the initial fire is underway.
