José María Morelos, Q.R. — Firefighters continue their battle with a blaze that has been burning four days. The fire that started at the municipal landfill over the weekend continues to burn.
Municipal personnel say emergency services are working continuously to control the blaze that is spreading among the layers of waste.

Germán Pineda Castillo, the Fire Department and the Municipal Emergency Unit Director, reported that from the first moment the alert was received, a strategy was defined to contain the fire.
The large blaze originated within the layers of garbage accumulated in the landfill and continues not only to burn, but spread.
He explained that this type of fire requires a planned approach, as the fire remains active beneath the waste. To combat it, water is used continuously while heavy machinery removes the garbage allowing firefighters to extinguish any hotspots that reignite when exposed to air.
As the waste is removed, the fire reignites in some areas so emergency personnel remain on constant alert to extinguish it and stop the continued spreading.
Once the fire is out, they will work on determining an official cause for the fire, which to date, remains unknown.
