Civil Protection rescues stuck turtle off Cozumel’s Playa Chen Rio

Cozumel, Q.R. — The Civil Protection Department of Cozumel rescued a stuck sea turtle Thursday. The 160 kilo turtle became lodged between rocks while trying to return to the sea.

Environmental authorities were made aware of the incident from a citizen report. A group of men set out to rescue the adult turtle which was found trapped between rocks on the eastern side of the island on Playa Chen Río.

“A Civil Protection unit was immediately dispatched to the site,” they reported. “Upon arrival, personnel located the turtle and proceeded with the necessary maneuvers to free it. Thanks to the team’s quick response, the turtle was successfully released and safely returned to the sea.”

The Civil Protection Directorate appreciates the public’s cooperation and encourages the public to continue reporting any situation that endangers the island’s wildlife, remembering that environmental protection is a shared responsibility.
