Zofemat looking to spend 1.3 million on Cozumel viewpoint repairs

Cozumel, Q.R. — A rehabilitation project is being developed by Zofemat for several of the island’s viewpoints. The Federal Maritime Land Zone Directorate (Zofemat) has plans to repair four of the tourist overlooks on the eastern end of the island.

The repairs, if approved by the municipality, will include a change from wood to plastic-based timber and the construction of sargassum watch towers.

Irwin Javier Batún Alpuche, Cozumel Director of the Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre (Zofemat), says resources for the repairs have already been approved. He says now they are waiting on local permits to be able to start since the outlooks are in protected areas.

“We are looking into the financial viability of switching from traditional wood to plastic-based timber. These are things we are working on with Ecology and Conanp since these are protected natural areas,” he said.

According to Batún Alpuche, the permits will also include approval for the construction of sargassum observation towers. A total investment of around 1.3 million pesos has been earmarked for the projects, however, he says an exact amount is not yet known.
