Ukraine tourist pulled from sea after being dragged by current

Cozumel, Q.R. — A man visiting Cozumel from the Ukraine was pulled from the sea after he was dragged from the coast by strong currents.

The incident happened Monday at 6:15 p.m. at Playa San Martín when his swimming companion noticed him struggling in the water. His friend, 32-year-old Alexander Biez Mienbu, was able to successfully pull his drowning travel partner from the sea and onto shore.

Reports say the victim, Ben Averhaus, was semi-conscious when he was attended to by on-duty lifeguards who reported the incident to Emergency 911. Police under the command of Deputy Director José Luís Pérez arrived at the beach and met with Mienbu, who recapped what had happened.

Civil Protection Lifeguard personnel were in charge of offering first aid while they waited for paramedics who transferred Averhaus to hospital. Authorities report he remains in stable condition.
