Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The first Playa del Carmen sea turtle nests of the season have been found on a beach north of the city.
The first two nests have been found on the beaches of Xcalacoco in the north part of Playa del Carmen. Both nests are from loggerhead sea turtles and have been marked by federal officers as a protected site.
Personnel from Zofemat, Civil Protection and the Tourist Police have been trained in how to handle the report of a nest. Environmental officers say that anyone finding a sea turtle nest can report it to Emergency 911.
Sea turtle nests have already been found in several areas of the region, several weeks earlier than normal.
