Two arrested for killing Cozumel dog

Cozumel, Q.R. — Two people have been arrested after allegedly killing a dog with an air gun. According to Guido Renán Rosas López, el Director of Seguridad Pública y Tránsito de Cozumel, one man and one woman have been taken into legal custody for the killing.

Rosas López reports that Edgar Antonio H.H. and Marcela R.V. were arrested for their alleged responsibility in the attack on a young dog who was shot and killed with an air gun. They are charged with crimes against the environment and wildlife to the detriment of society.

The pair were captured after witnesses identified them. The dog was allegedly shot for barking at them as they walked by. Both persons were transferred to the Public Security facilities for the corresponding procedures and were subsequently made available to the Attorney General of the State of Quintana Roo.

Juan Carlos Puga Alcerreca, the director de Desarrollo Social, said he will seek the highest possible fine possible under the regulation of Ecology and Animal Control, which could be 15,000 peso plus jail time.

The man reportedly shot at the dog several times with the air gun, hitting it once. The dog later died of its injuries.
