Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Three suspects have been detained in the fatal shooting of an Italian woman in Playa del Carmen. On Monday, Óscar Montes de Oca, head of the Quintana Roo FGE, reported the arrests of the three men in Veracruz.
He made the announcement during his regular Monday morning press conference. According to Montes de Oca, the three men were taken into custody as persons of interest in the targeted May 30 shooting of 40-year-old Ornella “S”.
The shooting happened in the morning inside a centrally located Playa del Carmen café. Ornella “S” was shot and killed by a gunman who fled on a motorcycle. The motorcycle was located later that same day, but not the shooter.
He also clarified that police do not believe the shooting was extortion related. “It has been ruled out that it was due to extortion. It is a fact related to her individual, personal work or patrimonial context since from what we have investigated it was a direct attack.”
Montes de Oca said that along with the three arrests, one vehicle was seized. The men were taken into custody by Veracruz authorities who are expected to hand them over to Quintana Roo police in coming days.
