Three buildings lost in afternoon resort blaze when town fire truck failed to start

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A fast moving fire consumed three palapa topped buildings and left others damaged Monday. The raging blaze consumed the three structures at the Sijil Noj Ha Resort due to wind gusts and a lack of firemen.

The resort, which is part of the Felipe Carrillo Puerto Ejido, started Monday afternoon several kilometers away from the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

Ejido land owners tried to put the fire out themselves, however, wind gusts fanned flames that quickly ate through the dry wood and grass buildings.

The fire was reported around 1:00 p.m. Civil Protection personnel responded since the town’s fire truck failed to start and firemen were unable to attend to the report. On-site personnel, municipal police officers and volunteers from the National Emergency Commission worked quickly to put out the flames and prevent further spreading.

One of the palapa buildings that burned was the resort’s kitchen, where, according to early information, the fire is believed to have started. Local authorities have begun an investigation to determine the official cause of the fire.
