Cancun, Q.R. — A municipal police officer from Isla Mujeres was killed Tuesday morning in Puerto Juárez by gunmen who reportedly fled in a white car.
The shooting occurred around 9:30 a.m. in front of the Ultramar maritime terminal on José López Portillo Avenue at Puerto Juárez. According to witnesses, those responsible for the attack fled aboard a white car.
The deceased officer has been identified as 40-year-old Sergio Leyva Córdoba who was a commander with la Policía Municipal de Isla Mujeres. He lived in Cancun and used the ferry crossing to get to work.
Immediately after the shooting, la Fiscalía General del Estado released a statement saying “At this time, the first interviews and the gathering of evidence are already being carried out.”
Vehicular traffic was shut down for more than an hour while police investigated and forensic personnel attended to the removal of the body.
Shortly after the shooting, the State Attorney General’s Office reported that in collaboration with the State Public Security Secretariat and elements of the National Defense Secretariat, the arrest of three people involved in the murder of a commander of the municipal police of Isla Mujeres.
Those arrested have been identified as Rogelio N, Israel N and Angel David N. A white car was also seized along with two firearms.
Unofficial reports say that the commander had received threats against his life in the past year.
