Mahahual, Q.R. — Boat owners in Mahahual are reporting a new issue at sea that has nothing to do with the arrival of sargasso.
Local fishermen say that unknown persons have stolen at least six boat motors in the past several days, something that paralyzes them.
Councilor María Hadad Castillo reported that the issue of security and crime prevention has not been addressed by the Othón P. Blanco City Council despite Costa Maya residents requesting a greater police presence.
Hadad Castillo says she regrets the Costa Maya security issue being unaddressed, adding that tourism financially benefits the city council.
“Several councilors have been insistent that security should be reinforced in Mahahual because the use of the maritime areas generates 50 million peso in collected taxes,” she said.
She also says she will keep the issues front-and-center with city council in hopes of obtaining a positive response and greater police presence in the area.
