Thick smoke fills air during Tulum garbage dump fire

Tulum, Q.R. — Authorities from the Tulum Fire Department were part of the team tasked with putting out a fire at the Tulum dump. The Saturday morning fire was also attended to by Civil Protection, the Secretary of National Defense and National Guard.

“This morning I was informed of an active fire in the municipal garbage landfill site,” Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo said adding that “we are taking precise and planned actions to combat this unfortunate incident.”

The fire quickly spread to a large section of the garbage dump, creating thick smoke that billowed for several hours. Machinery was brought in to help separate the burning garbage which allowed firemen to better control the flames.

By mid-day, authorities had the fire fully extinguished. State Civil Protection Coordination reported that “with precise and immediate actions, total control of the fire was achieved.”

Authorities did not say what caused the fire.
