Cozumel, Q.R. — The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) carried out an inspection inside the Cozumel Penitentiary Center. During the operation, hundreds of items considered contraband were seized from prisoners and removed from the facility.

“The Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana carried out the inspection in coordination with various authorities in order to detect prohibited objects. A review operation was carried out in the Cozumel Penitentiary Center in which elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security, Secretariat of National Defense, Secretariat of the Navy, State Attorney General’s Office, representatives of the Human Rights Commission and commanders of the Undersecretariat of Execution of Penalties and Security Measures participated,” the SSC reported.
During the inspection, items seized ranged from two 11-foot refrigerators to cigarettes, jewelry, music, a television, electronics, grills, a microwave oven, cell phones, tools, sex toys, cologne, a toy gun and drugs.

“These actions reaffirm the commitment to implement preventive measures to prevent the entry of prohibited items and maintain governability within the prison, in addition to guaranteeing the safety of persons deprived of their liberty, as well as of the citizens who live in the surrounding areas,” they said in their statement.
