Cozumel, Q.R. — A Cozumel driver was killed early Tuesday morning in a single vehicle accident. According to Cozumel Police, the male driver was speeding when he hit a concrete power pole, breaking it in two.
The accident happened at Puerto de Abrigo in the northern Hotel Zone of Cozumel. According to police, the driver, who was traveling at excessive speed, lost control on a corner. He hit a concrete CFE pole, breaking it in half before downing a pal tree.
Public Safety and Traffic officers along with Civil Protection, firefighters and emergency units attended to the accident. At the scene, police found a destroyed Mexico City-plated Mitsubishi with a trapped driver behind the wheel.
Parts of the car were found scattered for several meters around the accident scene due to the severity of the impact. The driver of the car is reported to have been the sole occupant.
In a statement, the Seguridad Ciudadana of Cozumel reported that “a serious accident occurred involving a vehicle traveling at excessive speed in the northern Hotel Zone of Cozumel at the height of the second curve of Puerto de Abrigo.
“Public Safety and Traffic officers, Civil Protection and firefighters, as well as emergency units, were on site carrying out the corresponding procedures. Both roads in that section were closed at kilometer 3.5 while the corresponding procedures were carried out.”
Additional details, including the identity of the driver, have not been released.
