Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Five people were left with injuries after a passenger bus skidded along the Federal Highway near central Playa del Carmen.
The accident occurred near Avenue 28 de Julio just after 8:00 a.m. when the bus was reportedly unable to stop in time for the turn in traffic light. Passengers on board say they were headed for Riviera Maya when, due to speeding, the bus driver was unable to stop in time for the light.
The bus ended up skidding before finally came to a stop after crashing into a tree in the highway median. The tree prevented the bus from entering the opposite lane of oncoming traffic. The bus suffered extensive damage including a blown-out windshield, side windows and door.
Municipal Transit police were on site to monitor traffic. The injured were transferred to hospital. A large tow crane eventually arrived to move the bus.
